Dear Richard,
I’m embarrassed by the overreaction from some of my countrymen. Do not think the majority, which is silent, actually supports this whole business.
As a matter of fact, the majority, which is silent, like in your country, remains silent – that’s why it’s the majority.
But we all squirm when the fringe lunatics take over and claim to be the voice of this country, which is not so.
Thank you for being so gracious and so generous in your defence of Shilpa, and in trying to understand the ‘un-understandable’.
I’m sorry that people tend to get carried away for the sake of publicity, sometimes for the sake of self-glorification, and sometimes in the name of justice, which is miscarried, but we support you and we will defend you.
Don’t worry, this country will stand vindicated because there are enough sensible people here, including Soli Sorabji and Ram Jethmalani, who I’m sure will volunteer to squash this case.
As far as the cause is concerned, we’ve thrown the baby out with the bath water – this is the tragedy of the whole thing. But the cause shall live on, because AIDS lives on.
