Lions for Lambs actor wins rising star gong

Newcomer Andrew Garfield, who stars in political thriller Lions for Lambs and the film Boy A, has won the Shooting Star award for emerging talent.

Garfield, 24, who graduated from drama school three years ago, was chosen for the award with eight other actors.

They were selected by prominent figures in the film industry for the European Film Promotion (EFP).

Judges described Garfield's performance in Boy A as "emotionally devastating" with "unexpected charm".

He plays Jack, a man who is released from prison after serving time for a murder he committed as a child.

Mentors

Garfield, who was born in the US but raised in the UK, is currently filming The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, directed by Terry Gilliam.

He and the other Shooting Star winners will attend the 2008 Berlin Film Festival in February where the jury will act as mentors offering guidance and support.

They will also be presented with awards at a ceremony, and each actor will have their work showcased.

Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz are previous recipients of the award, which aims to identify film stars of the future.
