Newly engaged Scarlett Johansson says falling in love has a lot to do with timing.
"You don't always meet the right person at the right time," she tells the August issue of Cosmopolitan.
Adds the 23-year-old actress (who romanced Josh Hartnett and Jared Leto before fiancĂ© Ryan Reynolds): "It's important for people to figure out their own lives before involving someone else — to gauge where you are and work on your own issues."
Johansson also clarifies her 2006 comments in which she said that people aren't monogamous by nature.
"I don't think it's a natural instinct for human beings," she tells the magazine of monogamy.
She adds, "Monogamy can be hard work for some people. I don't think it applies to everybody, and I don't think a lot of people can do it."
But Johansson (who showed off her engagement rock from Reynolds in May) insists, "I believe in finding a soul mate. I've always been in monogamous relationships. I would never want to be in an open one. It'd be too awful." via
