Madonna is brave -- but why take chances?
Her Madgesty insisted on wearing a bullet-proof vest under her black leather jacket on a visit to the Dona Marta shantytown in Rio the other day, the Globo newspaper reported.
Madonna -- accompanied by the governor of Rio de Janeiro state, Sergio Cabral, and a platoon of bodyguards -- spent 40 minutes in the lawless favela having raised $10 million from local businessmen to build a school there, like the one she built in Malawi.
MADONNA doesn't think much of Paul McCartney's live performances. She tells Rolling Stone: "People have told me, 'You could just go out there and play guitar and sing your songs like Paul McCartney,' but I'd be too bored. Most of the joy of the shows is the magic of creating them -- theater. I'm a perfectionist. I like hard work. I like to sweat."
She also revealed that The Post's famous front page headlined, "Madonna: I'm Not Ashamed," published after her nude photos appeared in Playboy, was proudly hanging in her home after being turned into art by her friends Keith Haring and Andy Warhol.
She said, "They took all these Post covers and painted over them. They're in my house in LA -- a signpost, a watershed moment."
She added that her Sticky & Sweet tour was the only thing that kept her sane during her painful divorce from Guy Ritchie: "I think work saved me, and I'm grateful that I had work to do. I may have thrown myself off a building."
Guy Ritchie said Madonna "makes things happen" and works hard at her career. "And, of course, here you go: I still love her, But she's retarded, too." The couple finalized their divorce in a U.K. court last November, after eight years of marriage.

The friend went on: "Everyone thinks they would be great together. Marc's ready to take things to the next level. He knows Madonna needs time, but he doesn't think Jesus is right for her."
Madonna dumped Jesus (pictured with her above earlier this month as she started her unsuccessful attempt to adopt Malawi girl MERCY.
The pair were snapped together for the first time since the split in New York this week. The pal went on: "Madonna doesn't want to rush into anything serious but Marc has been brilliant for her. He's been her rock over the breakdown of her adoption in Malawi."

Malawi's child welfare minister is backing Madonna's bid to adopt a second child from the impoverished southern African country.
That high-level endorsement came Thursday, a day before a judge is to rule on Madonna's request to adopt Chifundo "Mercy" James.
Women and Child Welfare Development Minister Anna Kachikho told the AP Malawi has nearly 2 million orphans. If people like Madonna adopt even one, Kachikho said, "it's one mouth less" for Malawi. Kachikho's ministry processes all adoptions in Malawi.
Kachikho added Madonna is helping more than 25,000 Malawian children.
A coalition of non-governmental organizations in Malawi says Madonna's plans have been fast-tracked because of her money and status. The minister says such critics are ungrateful. [ap]
Madonna will learn on Friday if she has received formal approval to adopt her second child, Mercy, from Malawi.
She signed the legal documents during a court visit in the town of Lilongwe in a closed session in front of a judge.

A nude photograph of pop singer Madonna was sold for $37,500 Thursday afternoon at a Christie's Art House auction.
The photo, originally expected to go for between $10,000 and $15,000, was purchased for more than double its original estimated selling price, a Christie's spokesperson confirmed. The 13-inch by 8 5/8-inch framed photograph was purchased by an anonymous bidder over the phone.
The full frontal photograph was one of several taken by American photographer Lee Friedlander in 1979. Madonna, then a cash-strapped student, received $25 for the entire photo shoot.

While Guy Ritchie battles news here in the U.K. that he's having a fling with actress Kelly Reilly on the set of his latest movie, he tells my source that he's preparing for even more mud: "He knows that Madonna and her big PR guns will pull out all the stops to damage him and his reputation." GUY Ritchie has already moved on. If you believe Us Weekly, Madonna's soon-to-be ex has taken up with British actress Kelly Reilly , who's in his "Sherlock Holmes" (filming now with Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock).
Ritchie demanded a divorce earlier this month after Page Six reported Madge and Alex Rodriguez had dinner at Dos Caminos on Third Avenue.

Alex Rodriguez could be heading for home with Madonna.
The divorced Yankees slugger is looking to buy a pad two blocks away from the divorcing singer - intensifying speculation that he's eager to replace husband Guy Ritchie in her life.
"Alex is moving closer to Madonna," a longtime A-Rod pal told the Daily News. "I wouldn't say they are an item, but he has a strong attraction to her."
Another Rodriguez pal confirmed he's been "looking aggressively" at 15 Central Park West, the much-hyped Robert A.M. Stern building where his neighbors would include Sting and wife Trudie Styler, who introduced Madonna to Ritchie in 1998.
One report had Rodriguez close to buying the $80million four-bedroom, 5,200-square-foot penthouse there. Insiders told The News he was scoping out several cheaper condos. Real estate records show no four-bedroom apartments have recently gone to contract or closed in the building.
Madonna lives at 41 Central Park West, where she combined two apartments into one stunning triplex for her family.
Last month, Rodriguez put his 4,600-square-foot Trump Park Avenue pad on the market for $14 million. Friends say he wants to unload the eight-room apartment, partly because it holds too many memories of his ex-wife, Cynthia, who charged in their divorce that he had had an "affair of the heart" with Madonna.
"After you decide to move on with your life, it figures you'd want to change your residence," a pal said.
Word of Rodriguez's condo shuffle comes days after reps for the Ritchies confirmed they're splitting.
Rodriguez shares Madonna's belief in the mystical Jewish tradition of kabbalah. Monday, Britain's Daily Mail quoted a friend of Madonna as saying, "She thinks he's physically a great specimen. And if she is going to have another child, he would be the ideal man."
Madonna spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg scoffed at the idea that the 50-year-old superstar was scouting the major leagues for baby daddies, but joked, "She thought [Tampa Bay Ray] Matt Garza pitched a great game last night."
If A-Rod does buy into 15 CPW, Madonna may not be around once he gets there. One report claimed she may stay in London so her children can remain close to Ritchie.
"None of that has been decided," said Rosenberg, dismissing reports the couple had reached a settlement.
Rosenberg also denied talk that Madonna and Rodriguez had hooked up in Miami last Friday, noting she wasn't in that city.

The former editor of the Daily Mirror has strong reason to ignore the statement, having had previous run-ins with her publicist Liz Rosenberg.
'I remember once phoning Miss Rosenberg to ask her if Madonna was pregnant,' he tells Live.
'"No, no, no," she insisted. "Madonna. Is. Not. Pregnant."
